The Mecenat.kz novel`s competition marks only the third instance in human history where a lifetime literary award is granted. The first known patron to offer such a reward was Gaius Maecenas in ancient Rome, who supported legendary poets like Horace, Virgil, Ovid, and Lucretius. The second time was under the reign of King Louis XIV of France, who bestowed similar honors upon celebrated writers such as Molière, Corneille, and Racine.
Mecenat.kz is a Kazakhstani literary initiative dedicated to promoting contemporary national literature by identifying and supporting outstanding authors. The project aims to foster the development of modern Kazakh literature and encourage the emergence of new literary talents.
In 2022, Mecenat.kz held its inaugural competition, receiving 67 novel submissions. The winner, author Sharkan Kazgulov, was awarded a lifetime monthly stipend of $500 for his novel Külpet. This financial support is facilitated through an annuity insurance contract with Freedom Finance Life, ensuring the author receives the stipend throughout his life.
The project`s founder, Mr Yerlan Askarbekov, conceived the idea in 2003 but found the environment unprepared at that time. The initiative gained momentum when Mr Timur Turlov, founder of Freedom Finance, agreed to provide financial backing, signaling a positive shift in societal attitudes toward supporting literature.
Mecenat.kz has garnered support from various organizations, including the Ministry of Culture and MFA of Kazakhstan, all major TV chennels. Information about the competition was disseminated to all 7,500 cultural institutions across Kazakhstan, ensuring widespread awareness and participation.
At the moment, the 4th season of the project is underway. Three winners are enjoying this unique award.
